Recreational Water – Public & Private Pools At KAUST

Overview

Public swimming pools are regulated public spaces where public health officials employ monitoring, inspection, and surveillance activities to ensure operational, safety, and public health requirements are met.

Physical, chemical, and microbiological hazards must be controlled to mitigate the risk of illness and injury.

Written Program

HSE provides oversight and compliance assistance to regulate the general operational, safety, and public health requirements for all public pools at KAUST, those pools operating at recreational facilities, and within our management villa locations.

The guidance is provided in KAUST’s Recreational Water Procedure, a set of fundamental principles about best practices in swimming pool water technical operation which will ensure continuous disinfection and filtration of the pool during its operation along with creating a healthy swimming environment. With operational procedures, pool staff and operators can provide an enjoyable swimming experience for all users and visitors.

The Recreational Water Program enables HSE to manage anticipated hazards associated with public swimming pools and to implement risks appropriate controls, such as:

  • Water quality testing to ensure that the water meets standards related to, for example, temperature and pH levels.
  • Verifying the proper handling and administering of chemical dosing takes place to prevent biological infection from pathogens such as Cryptosporidium, Pseudomonas and other various bacteria and viruses causing gastroenteritis.
  • Inspecting the facility safety around pool areas to prevent, for example, slip, trips and falls, and entrapment accidents.
  • Biological Infection from Pool Fouling procedures to manage the potential risk to blood-borne pathogens, Cryptosporidium, Giardia and faecal pathogens.
Overview
Overview

Swimming Pool operators are required to manage the day-to-day operation of the pool and monitor/record operational parameters for the following. HSE verifies the following items through a robust inspection program to ensure that Public Health and Safety provisions are met:

  • pH
  • Free and Total chlorine
  • Total Dissolved Solids
  • Log book records (e.g., makeup water, chemicals added, bather load, maintenance records, etc.)

HSE performs microbiological surveillance of the public pool water quality to monitor the bacteriological quality of the water. A third-party laboratory tests for indicator organisms and/or pathogens:

  • Heterotrophic Plate Count HPC
  • Total & Faecal Coliforms
  • Pseudomonas
