KAUST’s rainy months bring not only water and the potential for flooding and water infiltration into residential building envelopes, but also increased health risks associated with infectious diseases. At KAUST, safety is a shared responsibility. Each of us plays a role in preventing fires and in holding one another accountable for safe behavior. Despite ongoing outreach and education efforts by the KAUST Fire Department (KFD), incidents caused by unattended cooking have risen since January 2024.

The rainy season is coming soon to western Saudi Arabia, especially around Jeddah and Thuwal, peaking between November and March.

We’re excited to invite the KAUST community to the annual Fire Station Open Day! This is your chance to learn about fire safety and discover how our Fire Station plays a vital role in Keeping KAUST Safe.

To foster a culture of fire safety within the KAUST community and ensure the well-being of all residents, we encourage everyone to prioritize fire awareness in their homes. KAUST values your safety and urges all residents to adopt the following simple yet crucial practices to safeguard your family, home, and neighbors from the serious consequences of fire.

To better serve our community, Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) in collaboration with KAUST Smart, developed new emergency features now available on the KAUSTCentral app and include dissemination of emergency notifications via KAUSTCentral.

We in HSE would like to recognize KAUST’s pet friendly culture but to also recognize the health risks and unintended consequences for community animals living in and around our work spaces on campus. The practice of feeding and/or harboring these community animals at the workplace may create such unintended consequences.

All buildings at KAUST have been constructed according to international fire safety and emergency evacuation codes. Each building is equipped with a fire/evacuation alarm system, clearly marked emergency exits and designated assembly points to facilitate organized emergency evacuations. Our collective aim is to prevent disorganized evacuations, which can lead to confusion, injury and property damage. Therefore, when a building evacuation is announced, evacuation is mandatory.

At KAUST, we strive to keep our community safe from fires of all types and to share helpful information to prevent fires, including fires that start in homes due to unattended cooking. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires and fire-related injuries and deaths in homes worldwide, which is preventable. One way we can all contribute to Keeping KAUST Safe is to prevent actions that can cause fires in our homes, such as unattended cooking. Here’s how:

KAUST Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Department in collaboration with the KAUST School (TKS) is excited to introduce a unique biodiversity community engagement project, “Bug Hotels,” as a part of its DIY Biodiversity Series.

Occupational Health invited LEM (Lab Equipment Maintenance) and HSE (Health and Safety Environment) team members to take part in an eight-week Health challenge from November 2021 to January 2022.

In June 2019, KAUST Health and Safety kicked off the 'WANTED: KAUST HSE Safety Champion Award' program for construction work.

Bike Week 2019 – brought to you by HSE, Community Life and KAUST Sustainability – will take place from November 9 to November 15.

Two weather stations are located at KAUST to report air quality information.

Last November, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), in collaboration with the Institutional Reporting and Data Governance team, sent all community members the HSE Pulse Survey.

Whether you walk, bike, or drive a vehicle, scooter, or golf cart in KAUST, you share the road with other road users, including pedestrians of all age groups. We are committed to Keeping KAUST Safe on the roads, and need every road user's safe actions to support that commitment.

The primary hazard from trenching and excavation is employee injury from cave-ins. Soil analysis is important in order to determine appropriate sloping, benching, and shoring.
