Managing the diverse range of chemical and hazardous substances within an organization is an important aspect not only from a safety perspective but an efficiency aspect as well. The SALUTE’s chemical inventory module is used at KAUST and is managed through the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Department. This Chemical Inventory module allows users to create individual inventories assigned to their specific locations/laboratories with one or more owners and catalog all of the chemicals in use within an entire organization using the Chemical Library feature.
In addition, users are able to generate Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) directly from the SALUTE platform and send them to anyone requesting the information. SALUTE’s Chemical Inventory system is powered by a partnership with ChemWatch, one of the most comprehensive databases in the world. This partnership provides SALUTE users seamless access to chemical details based on CAS, chemical name, or other identifiers.
In order to take advantage of this system, it is advised that researchers understand how to use and maintain the SALUTE chemical inventory module to further their laboratories productive operations.
For any inventory system to work efficiently a simple and coherent naming convention is required to reduce confusion not only for the laboratory personnel but also for Chemical Warehouse, procurement, and delivery services personnel as well. For KAUST’s SALUTE chemical inventory, the below naming convention will be utilized in the chemical inventory as well as on the labels affixed on chemical bottles at the Chemical Warehouse.
Notes: Only FLOC designations are to be used, LFO designations will be rejected.
For individual Principle Investigators, the naming convention in the chemical inventory will appear with the the Professor’s name (last, first) followed by the FLOC location (on labels, only the 14 characters of the Professor’s last name will appear as space is limited to only 14 characters).
Below is an example for Professor John Smith’s chemical inventory in 9- 4128. Quick links to SDS and Guides
The Chemical Reuse Program provides the Research community with an opportunity to obtain chemicals free of charge. This program was developed by the Chemical Warehouse with the support of researchers to save purchasing and waste disposal costs and lead time. The program emphasizes our commitment to protect the environment by reducing the overall volume of hazardous waste generated.
Ideal chemicals for reuse are unopened, unexpired containers however opened containers that are still mostly full and uncontaminated can also be reused.
Containers must be in good condition, with the original manufacturerʼs labels present. Damaged, leaking or non- manufacturer containers are not suitable for reuse and should be disposed of through the normal chemical waste disposal process.
Acceptance and donation of Peroxide Forming Chemicals are excluded from this program.
Partially used chemicals can be ordered from the Chemical Warehouse through the SciQuest catalog as part of the usual warehouse items ordering process. The SciQuest catalog is updated daily. You can identify and search for free of cost chemicals under the MATERIAL MASTER number starting with 7000XXXXX series.
